CULTURENot long ago, the Hmong culture was verbally passed down from generations to generation primarily as an oral culture. Up until the 1950s, the Hmong in Laos were not literate in their first native language because their native language had no written form until American and French missionaries used the Roman alphabet system to record the Hmong language. Today the Hmong in America have adapted a language, some have begun to call 'Hmonglish". The history and culture of the Hmong has slightly changed over the years because storytellers sometimes add or forget parts of the story. EDUCATIONEducation for the Hmong, used to be very limited (and in some parts of the country, it still is). At one point in history, education wasn’t important. Children didn’t need to be educated in anything else other than farming. Parents and grandparents lived on farms and worked in the fields all day. If a family could afford to educate their children, only the sons were given the privilege. Women didn’t need to go to school because their main duties were to take care of the crops, animals, and the children in the house. Today, in America, Hmong students are excelling in school. FASHIONOne of the most unique things about the Hmong is their clothing. This distinct element in the culture is what distinguishes each group from another, and live or came from different regions around the world. Details in color, pattern, and texture, give indications of individuality to a group. WORLDThe Hmong are scattered all over the world. It is estimated that there are 12 million Hmong people across the world. 8 million of those live in China. The rest of the Hmong population is scattered across Northern Vietnam, Northern Laos, Northern Thailand, Northeastern Burma, Cambodia, the United States, France, Canada, Australia, and other countries. PEOPLEHmong people have their own terms for the subcultural divisions among themselves, two of the largest being White Hmong (Hmong Der or Dawb) and Green or Blue Mong (Mong Leng or Leeg). ART & POETRYHmong traditional art is mainly made of embroidery or paj ntaub with sophisticated geometrical designs, usually in combination of red and green, and yellow and blue colors. It is an abstract art. There are geometrical patterns that have been transmitted from generation to generation long time ago. According to scholars, the geometrical figures would be fields, rivers, houses, places, etc. that the Hmong people had left because of wars and starvations during their migration to the South and to the West. MUSICTraditional Hmong music has always been valued as a part of the culture: as an art form in communication between two lovers, as courtships; expressions of gratitude and resentment. There are different forms of music that are reminiscent of old times: Lam Vong, and Kwv Txiaj, among others. While this last form has become less popular among the youth, another has emerged to provoke emotions and social change.
